As Minnesota puts the spotlight on manufacturers this week with Governor Dayton recognizing the $43 billion contribution manufacturing brings to the state's economy, a Plymouth company is seeing double-digit growth in its manufacturing business thanks to domestic demand.
"Any manufacturing environment uses our types of products," said Dr. Neal Schumacher, vice president of Plymouth-based Banner Engineering.
At the Banner Engineering headquarters in Plymouth, machines run around the clock on the manufacturing floor producing sensors and other lighting components used in factory equipment. Even the equipment Banner uses has its own products in it.
"We actually build the sensors, sell them to this company and then we end up with a piece of equipment with our own sensors on it," said Kari Simon, a production manager at Banner.
In the last two years alone, Banner Engineering has increased its local staff by about 20 percent with 430 employees currently working in Plymouth.
"Business is doing very well for us right now," said Schumacher. "Domestically, probably our largest market is automotive. Any of the factories that produce cars would be using our sensors."
While this company ships its products around the world to countries including Germany, China and Canada, 60 percent of its business is domestic. It's where Banner is seeing its largest growth this year, including in the pharmaceutical industry.
"There is a trend toward regional manufacturing, where you are trying to put manufacturing and distribution close to where your customers are to facilitate quick deliveries," said Schumacher.
With 1,100 employees worldwide, Banner Engineering currently has 19 local job openings, and it doesn't foresee a slowdown in hiring.
"We're planning for growth, and I think that's part of what's exciting about our business," said Schumacher.
